August 14 - Updates re: Cohorts and Schedules

posted Aug 15, 2020, 5:33 AM by stasonish@northandoverpublicschools.com
Dear NAPS Families and Staff,

Late Monday Night, the North Andover School Committee voted 4-1 to approve the reopening plan to begin the school year in the following hybrid model for all students:

The kindergarten hybrid model separates students into either an AM or a PM group (Monday - Friday).

In the grades 1-12 hybrid learning model, NAPS students will be assigned to attend school in-person two full-days per week, either Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday, with Wednesday being a remote learning day for everyone.

It is important to note that the School Committee vote amended the presented plan for NAHS to a full school day for the in-person days in the hybrid model.

At this time, we are in the process of confirming the 618 students who “opted in” to the Online Learning Academy. Student schedules and cohorts are being reviewed and adjusted to reflect the impact of Online Academy numbers and the change to a full day schedule at North Andover High School. This is intensive work, and we expect that you will receive an update towards the end of next week from your building principals regarding cohort assignments.

The families of students who chose the Online Learning Academy (OLA) will be receiving a confirmation email today.

The School Committee is scheduled to meet next Thursday evening to review and discuss the 2020-2021 school-year calendar. At this time, and as a result of recent DESE guidance, the first day of school is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2020 (pending School Committee approval). Given the significant changes reopening plans require in the way schools operate, the School Committee continues to negotiate with the North Andover Teacher’s Association (NATA).

School administrators will continue to monitor metrics related to COVID-19 rates, guidance from state and local officials, and updates from medical experts. As conditions change, the learning models offered by the district will be reassessed.

In addition to an update from principals next week, we will be sending out an update on technology and chromebooks, staff professional development and important timeline information for students and families.

We appreciate your continued support and partnership as we prepare to start the new school year. Have a great weekend.

Best,

Dr. Gregg T. Gilligan, Superintendent
