Adventures in Science - STEM 2019 June 24 - 28 & July 15 - 19 We Spark Imagination and Curiosity! North Andover Middle School/Community Programs: Adventures in Science (STEM), offers children a chance to discover first hand how “cool” science can be! Field exploration combined with hands-on inquiry based investigations create lasting links for students to learn. Students develop and apply critical thinking and problem skills. In addition, the positive experiences associated with summer camps emphasizes interpersonal skill development, including the ability to make decisions, self-confidence, and communication. Program Day: 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. It is imperative students be on time for field adventures. We have a scheduled bus departure times to allow for adequate travel to and from field adventures. Includes a guided tour of the salt marsh, birding with binoculars, as well water chemistry stations. Wednesday June 26 U.S. Constitution/Museum https://ussconstitutionmuseum.org PROGRAM DAY: 8:00 - 3:00 Buses: Depart NAMS at 8:30 - Arrive Constitution by 10:30 Return to NAMS at 1:45 and Arrive by 3:00 STEM Theme “Simple Machines”. In this 90 minute program, students will learn about six simple machines at use on the USS Constitution and see how these make life and work easier for the sailors on board. The program features an explanation of the simple machines, a scavenger hunt in the Museum galleries to see them in action, and a design activity where students are challenged to build an invention (using simple machines) which makes life easier for the crew (rolls a hammock or moves powder between multiple decks for example). After the Museum and STEM Experience we will have lunch and tour the Constitution. Buses: Depart NAMS: 8:00 - Arrive in Canton by 10:15 Return to NAMS at 1:30 - Arrive at NAMS 3:00 TreeTop Adventures forest high ropes course consists of more than 130 platforms installed in the trees connected by various "obstacles" like rope netting, rolling logs, climbing walls, air trapeze and zip-lines. 10 Trails ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert create trails that are both challenging and achievable for every age (7+) and fitness level. Friday 19 - MSPCA at Nevin’s Farm, Methuen MA https://www.mspca.org/adoption-centers/nevins-farm-adoption-center/ Program Day is 8:00 to 3:00 DEPART NAMS AT 10:20 - RETURN TO NAMS AT 2:00 FOR 2:30 Arrival Discover who the MSPCA is , what they do and how kids can help animals in the MSPCA and their community. After you become familiar with the mission of the MSPCA, you will tour the barn and the small animal shelters. Learn details about the animals who are there – general facts and care, and why those types of animals might end up at the shelter. Here stories about some of the animals and how their journey brought them to the shelter. During the tour, there will be animals in every area. Animals that are socially friendly will be taken from their cages so you may meet and play with them. Animals can vary at the shelter, typically they have horses, chickens, pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs, house birds, cats and dogs – at the moment they have goats, sheep ponies and a gecko as well. / 1 |
