Students Not Attending North Andover in the Fall 2019

If a student will not be attending North Andover Public Schools in September of 2019, parents/guardians will need to notify Mrs. Barron as soon as possible by either email or coming into the main office of NAMS.  At the end of the school year your student’s records will be forwarded to their new school. Please contact Mrs. Barron with any questions at barronm@northandoverpublicschools.com

So, what is your child doing this summer?

Check out the summer offerings available for middle school students through Community Programs here.

Attention Music Parents/Guardians and Students

Did you know that NAMA (North Andover Music Association) offers music stipends for tuition and fee assistance for the July 2019-June 2020 Year?

NAMA can help with the cost of tuition or application fees for NAPS music students attending music honors programs, music training programs, and summer music or music theatre camps or programs.

If you are interested in applying for a stipend please fill out the NAMA Stipend Application and ask your music teacher to sign and submit it to the NAMA stipend committee. Only one stipend per calendar year may be submitted for each student.  If you would like a scholarship to a summer program, please submit the application by June 14, 2019. More information about NAMA and how you can volunteer as a music parent can be found here or at the following address: https://northandovermusic.org A link to the application is also posted in General Forms under the Documents and Forms tab on the NAMA website located here or at the following website: https://northandovermusic.org/documents

Recycling & Composting Updates

Since the program started at NAMS, about 5 weeks ago, approximately 2,700 lbs of food waste has been diverted from going into the trash, and instead brought to a local farm where it is cared for and eventually turned into soil to go back to the Earth to grow food.

Museum of Science Vaping Presentations in Auditorium

NAHS Grade 9 students were able to attend what I have been told was a truly engaging, educational, and amazing vaping presentation at the Museum of Science this past month. When asked if our students could attend, we were hard pressed to find a date that would work for all 3 grades. So, we asked if the presenter could come to us! If you didn't already know, our nurse leader (Cheryl Barczak) and our nurses (Kathleen Pease and Beth Hassaneine) are so awesome that they were able to convince and cajole the presenter to come to NAMS free of charge. We are able to schedule 3 grade level presentations thanks to their efforts:

   8:00-8:35 Grade 6

   8:50-9:30 Grade 8

   9:44-10:24 Grade 7

Fresh Look at Old Habits is the title of the presentation. Students and staff will be hearing from current science & technology experts as they reveal the latest research on tobacco, nicotine, and marijuana use by adolescents and young adults. Smoking and vaping – old habits with a new understanding.

Working together, we can guide and support our children to make our future great. Remember that we are preparing our children for their future, not our past.

Moving-Up Day

All of our students will be informed what team they will be on next year on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 and will also be able to meet their teachers on this day. Our grade 5 students will be coming up to NAMS, our grade 6 students will be meeting their grade 7 teachers for next year, our grade 7 students will be meeting their grade 8 teachers, and our grade 8 students will be going up to NAHS as part of this annual tradition.

Have you been following NAMS on Twitter?

Attention Grade 8 Families - We need your help with Grade 8 End-of-Year Activities

To make these end-of-year events possible for our students, we need your help.

Field Day - Wednesday, June 12th (Rain Date is Thursday, June 13th) is a day full of fun and organized activities and will be held on fields behind NAMS, and not the Youth Center. Even though the teachers organize the activities, this day would not be possible without lots of parent volunteers!

Class Night - Tuesday, June 18th is an evening of fun, food, and music for the students to enjoy with their 8th grade teachers. This event includes parent volunteers (set up and clean up) and food donations.

You can help by signing up here or at the following address: http://signup.com/go/ELDUkKC

If you have any questions regarding the activities please contact parent volunteers Eleanor Lucarini at erlucarini@gmail.com , Diane Nikolopoulos at santorini1010@comcast.net , or Maria Philbin at nj1822@comcast.net

Donation Drive for the MSPCA at Nevins Farms

The Life Skills classroom at NAMS has organized a Donation Drive for the MSPCA at Nevins Farms, the week of June 3rd - 7th.  Donation boxes will be placed in each homeroom and the wish list distributed (MSPCA Donation Wish List).  Your donations are greatly appreciated by our friends at MSPCA.  Here is a short video clip to acquaint you with the shelter and the animals in need (MSPCA Video/Volunteer Jennifer Taris).

If you are not familiar with MSPCA at Nevins Farm, they are an open admissions, non-profit organization located in Methuen, MA.   Each year thousands of animals arrive at the Noble Family Animal Care & Adoption Center at Nevins Farm. Almost every animal that is surrendered to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm is in need of some type of medical care.  Some may only need basic vaccines or routine surgery, while others may be suffering serious injury or living with undiagnosed and untreated illnesses. They are the only shelter in the area that does barn animal surrender and adoptions.  As a non-profit organization, the MSPCA resources are limited when it comes to caring for expensive and time-consuming medical cases (link to video). The following funds have been developed to meet the needs of the many animals who need our help.

North Andover Middle School is helping to do our part through a Donation Drive for MSPCA at Nevins Farm.  A list of items that can be sent in with your student is below as well as the link to a video.

Thank you for supporting our little friends,

Mrs. Kate DeLisle & Ms. Kathleen Taris
