Grade 8 Essay Contest The Massachusetts Municipal Association is moving its 8th Grade Essay contest to coincide with the celebration of the second annual Municipal Month in the Commonwealth. In past years, the MMA solicited submissions for the essay contest during the fall, with the winner announced and recognized at the MMA’s Annual Meeting & Trade Show in January. With the advent of Municipal Month, the MMA will officially kick off the essay contest at its Annual Meeting, with the winner receiving the award in May. This contest encourages the potential local leaders of the future to reflect on the role of key elected officials and how cities and town operate. At a time when cities and towns find it increasingly difficult to fill important positions on volunteer boards or to reach quorums for town meetings, the contest seeks to expand students’ knowledge of local government and instill an interest in civic participation at a young age, leading to a more informed constituency and greater engagement by residents. Stay tuned for more information about how students can enter the essay contest this spring.
Annual Grade 8 trip to Nature's Classroom The dates of this year’s Annual Grade 8 Trip to Nature’s Classroom are as follows: Team 8A - October 15-17, 2018 Team 8B - October 17-19, 2018 Team 8C - October 22-24, 2018 All of our Grade 8 Teams will be going to the Nature's Classroom Site in Ocean Park, ME. You can learn more about the site and about the programming at Nature's Classroom here. Specific information regarding the upcoming trips will be shared with grade 8 families tomorrow, including drop off and pick up information and more.
Food Rescue @ NAMS All of our schools in North Andover participate in the Food Rescue Program, which helps students and families in need. When students are cleaning up after lunch they have multiple bins to choose from:
• Liquids Barrel for students to pour out any remaining liquids before recycling
• Recycling Bins
• Food Rescue Bin
• Trash Barrels
The Food Rescue Bin is used to collect the following food items:
• produce – fresh or packed cups
• raisins and craisins
• chips and crackers
• granola and power bars
• milk, yogurt, and cheese sticks
• fruit juice and water
• cafeteria-made sandwiches
After lunches are complete, the Food Rescue bin is placed in the refrigerator to await pick up. Food is then sorted by volunteers at NAHS for distribution.

Bytes of Code Are you interested in learning about coding and animation, digital art, and digital music? If so, then check out the Bytes of Code classes to be held at Stevens Memorial Library this fall. These drop-in classes are open to all students ages 11 - 18, and a different topic will be covered each week. No need to register and you can attend just one class or multiple classes. The first class will be held this Wednesday, September 26, 2:40 - 3:40 pm. More information is available on the Stevens Memorial Library’s website.
Girls Who Code Any grade 6-12 girls who are interested in technology are encouraged to submit an application for the Girls Who Code program at Stevens Memorial Library. No previous coding experience is required! The program will be held on Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m., September 25th to April 23rd. Lottery Applications for this exciting program are available in the NAMS Library or in the Teen Room at Stevens Memorial Library. All applications must be returned to Stevens Memorial Library by Friday, September 21, 2018. |
