THROUGH COMMUNITY PROGRAMS http://www.northandoverpublicschools.com/departments/community-programs MINECRAFT AND MINDSTORMS Our Minecraft Program is tailored to all skill levels, whether you’re just starting out your explorations or you already know you’re way around creepers. Typically, kids and teens play Minecraft at home with little to no direction or goals in mind. At Minecraft North Andover, students approach gameplay from a new angle, and are empowered to discover the underlying mechanics of the game in a collaborative environment. Beginner to advanced students in our Minecraft program learn how to think critically about their work with the infinite possibilities of the game. Students create themes, storylines, dialog between characters, objectives, goals, and more, while more experienced players delve deeper into game design & development, modding, and level design Participants of nearly any skill level can have fun building and launching commands using simple and complex automation inside of Minecraft. As they master skills, we offer challenges that teach key concepts in programming, design, electrical engineering, and architecture, all while using teamwork and social skills. It’s the perfect blend of fun, learning, and creativity. Students will build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® to solve challenges and participate in various competitions. Students will program their robots to participate in games such as soccer, baseball, sumo bots and battle bots! WITH NATURE’S PACE Perhaps you’ve heard of Girls On The Run, well this is my twist on that confidence-building program: Girls On A Hike! Kick off summer with this three day program that builds camaraderie, self-confidence and positive self-talk for middle school girls. Having the strength to be comfortable in your own skin is a rare quality at this age, so here is an opportunity for girls to work on that skill in a fun way. Each day the group will explore a new trail in Harold Parker Forest, distances will range from 1.5 - 2.5 miles. These are mild nature walks, and plenty of time will be given to check out and enjoy cool areas. This program is being offered in the woods, because walking in the woods increases the feel-good chemicals in our bodies that make us happier, kinder, and less stressed. Being in a beautiful outdoor setting stirs wonder and awe, which makes us feel alive and adventurous! What better place, then, to focus on your strengths and build confidence? Along the trail, “sit spots” will be chosen where the group will take a break from walking and discuss a daily topic: 1) self confidence 2) positive self talk 3) mindfulness. Individual and team building activities will follow to reflect on the day’s topic. Activities will include: compiling positive “I Am” statements, writing a letter to self, creating a “good vibes” journal, building a kindness trail, etc. Journals and writing materials are provided. Girls will only need a backpack, sneakers, water bottle, and snack. Your daughter will feel good and discover something wonderful about themself each day! Nature’s Pace is owned and operated by Christine Cohne, local teacher and outdoor enthusiast. Visit Nature’s Pace, LLC. on Facebook, or on Instagram @natures.pace.adventures to learn more about our programming.
